Positive Behaviour Support

Understanding behaviour and building positive change together

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred approach that helps understand why behaviours of concern happen and develops strategies to improve quality of life while reducing these behaviours. PBS is not about controlling or punishing behaviour. It's about understanding what the behaviour is communicating and creating environments where the person can thrive.

Our PBS practitioners work collaboratively with you, your support network, and your support workers to develop practical, evidence-based strategies that respect your dignity, preferences, and rights while promoting positive outcomes.

Why Choose Care Compass for PBS?

Qualified Practitioners

Our PBS practitioners hold appropriate qualifications and stay current with evidence-based practice and NDIS Quality and Safeguards requirements.

Person-Centred Focus

We place the person at the centre of everything we do. PBS is about improving quality of life, not just managing behaviour.

Collaborative Approach

We work with you, your family, support workers, and other professionals to create strategies that work in real-world settings.

Trauma-Informed Practice

We understand that behaviour often has roots in past trauma or unmet needs. Our approach is compassionate, respectful, and non-punitive.

What to Expect

1. Initial Assessment

We'll meet with you and your support network to understand the behaviours of concern, what's been tried before, and what outcomes you're hoping for.

2. Functional Assessment

Our practitioner will conduct a detailed assessment to understand what triggers the behaviour, what purpose it serves, and what environmental factors contribute.

3. Behaviour Support Plan Development

We'll create a comprehensive plan that includes proactive strategies, skill teaching, environmental changes, and reactive strategies if needed.

4. Implementation and Training

We'll train everyone involved in supporting you to implement the plan consistently. Ongoing coaching and support is provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PBS involve restrictive practices?

PBS aims to reduce and eliminate the need for restrictive practices. Any restrictive practices must be a last resort, properly authorised, regularly reviewed, and work toward elimination. Our focus is on positive, proactive strategies.

How long does PBS take to show results?

This varies depending on the complexity of the behaviours and how consistently the plan is implemented. Some people see improvements within weeks, while others may take months. PBS is a long-term investment in quality of life.

Will my support workers need training?

Yes. For PBS to be effective, everyone who supports you needs to understand and consistently implement the strategies. We provide thorough training and ongoing coaching for your support team.

What if the behaviour is dangerous?

Safety is always the priority. Your Behaviour Support Plan will include reactive strategies to keep everyone safe while we work on longer-term proactive strategies to reduce the behaviour.

Can PBS help with communication difficulties?

Yes. Often behaviours of concern are a form of communication. PBS can include teaching alternative communication methods and working with speech pathologists to improve communication skills.
