Individualised Living Options
Create a home and lifestyle designed around you
What are Individualised Living Options?
Individualised Living Options (ILO) is a flexible approach to housing and support that puts you at the centre. Instead of fitting into an existing group home or accommodation model, ILO allows you to design your own living arrangement with the people, place, and supports that work for your life.
ILO can look different for everyone. You might share a home with housemates you choose, live independently with support dropping in, or create a unique arrangement that reflects your goals, preferences, and the life you want to live.
The ILO Journey: Two Stages
Setting up an ILO arrangement involves two distinct stages, each with specific goals and funding.
Stage 1: Exploration and Design
This stage is all about planning and designing your ideal living arrangement. It's funded separately and focuses on working out what you want and how to make it happen.
What happens in Stage 1:
- Understanding ILO and whether it's right for you
- Identifying your housing preferences and lifestyle goals
- Exploring different ILO models and arrangements
- Finding suitable housing or compatible housemates
- Designing your support model and working out costs
- Developing your ILO proposal for NDIA approval
- Planning the transition from your current living situation
Stage 1 Funding: This is typically funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan. The funding covers the time and expertise needed to explore options and design your arrangement before you move.
Stage 2: Implementation
Once your ILO arrangement is approved and funded, Stage 2 is about making it real and living your life in your new home.
What happens in Stage 2:
- Moving into your chosen home
- Setting up your living space and establishing routines
- Recruiting and training your support workers
- Receiving ongoing daily support as designed in Stage 1
- Building connections in your local community
- Regular reviews and adjustments to your arrangement
- Working toward your independence and lifestyle goals
Stage 2 Funding: This is your ongoing support funding, typically through SIL (Supported Independent Living) in your Core Supports budget. This covers your day-to-day support for as long as you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is ILO different from SIL or group homes?
ILO gives you more control over where you live, who you live with, and how support is delivered. Unlike traditional SIL or group homes, you design the arrangement rather than fitting into an existing model.
Do I need Stage 1 funding before I can start?
Yes, Stage 1 funding is important for proper planning. It ensures your ILO arrangement is well designed and has NDIA approval before you commit to moving or signing leases.
How long does Stage 1 take?
Stage 1 typically takes 6-12 months, depending on how quickly you find housing, design your supports, and get NDIS approval. We work at your pace.
Can I choose my own housemates?
Yes! One of the key benefits of ILO is that you can choose who you live with, whether that's friends, family, or compatible housemates you meet through the Stage 1 process.
What if my needs change over time?
ILO is flexible. We can adjust your support levels, routines, and arrangements as your needs, goals, and circumstances evolve throughout Stage 2.
